Sent a brief letter to Councilwoman Hahn today. She decided to scuttle a film festival planned by some Vets in San Pedro... the event was to show Tora Tora Tora and the city shut them down because some Japanese-Americans "MIGHT" be offended....

Here's the letter sent to her chief of staff (No generic email on the site):

Mike,

Just dropping a line as I was unable to find a generic contact email (or form) on Councilwoman Hahn's website.

My comments concern an article that appears in the current online version of the Daily Breeze where Ms. Hahn has voiced her objection to a San Pedro film event.

Though I am obviously not privy to any more information than the newspaper provides, it seems to me that Ms. Hahn and the city shuttered the program solely to avoid the possibility that some Japanese Americans might be offended.

The article does not divulge that any group actually protested, or that any number of concerned citizens asked the city to take action -- but rather it indicates that the city acted preemptively to ensure that no group would actually ever need to protest.

I find it to be a sad state of affairs when our elected leaders attempt to quash anything that could be construed as even moderately controversial in favor of hiding behind political correctness. The open and frank discussion of issues (past, present, and future) is of paramount concern to our nation, and when government attempts to minimize conversations or communications that might be offensive, I believe there is great cause for concern.

Please let Ms. Hahn know that I respectfully disagree with her position on this issue.

John J. Mosko
